PHONE SET-UP GUIDE
Set the phone up once, properly. Most scan problems are one of three settings.
For practitioners and clients.
Before you start
☐ Phone software up to date ☐ Browser up to date ☐ Charged to at least 30% ☐ Other apps closed ☐ At least 1 GB storage free ☐ Camera lens wiped
Most camera freezes come from low memory or an old browser. Both take two minutes to fix and neither is obvious when it happens.
1 · The three that cause most failures
| Power saving on | Freezes the live camera and reloads the page. Turn it off |
| Background apps running | Especially video and social. Close everything |
| Old browser | Update through Software Update or the Play Store |
Fix these three and most problems disappear.
2 · iPhone and iPad
| Browser | Safari, recommended. Chrome also works |
| Software | Settings › General › Software Update |
| Camera permission | Settings › Safari › Camera › Allow. Tap Allow when the page asks |
| Background apps | Swipe up from the bottom, swipe away everything else |
| Low Power Mode | Off. Settings › Battery |
| Private browsing | Avoid. An unfinished scan may not be saved if the tab closes |
| Auto-Lock | Settings › Display & Brightness › Auto-Lock › 5 minutes or longer |
| Storage | At least 1 GB free. Settings › General › iPhone Storage |
Optional but worth it. Share › Add to Home Screen. Opens full screen with fewer interruptions.
3 · Android
| Browser | Google Chrome, updated through the Play Store. Avoid built-in or 'lite' browsers |
| Camera permission | Chrome › ⋮ › Settings › Site settings › Camera › Allow for this site. Also Settings › Apps › Chrome › Permissions › Camera |
| Battery Saver | Off. It freezes the live camera on many phones |
| Battery optimisation | Settings › Apps › Chrome › Battery › Unrestricted, so the tab isn't closed when you switch apps |
| Background apps | Recent-apps button, clear everything else |
| Data Saver / Lite mode | Off in Chrome settings. It can block photo uploads |
| Screen timeout | Settings › Display › Screen timeout › 5 minutes or longer |
| Storage | At least 1 GB free |
4 · Taking the photos
Light
Face a window in soft daylight. The client faces the light, not away from it.
No coloured bulbs. No strong overhead light. No direct sun.
One consistent source. Mixed daylight and overhead is worse than either alone.
Use the same spot every time. A four-week comparison only means something if the conditions match — a change that is really a lighting change tells you nothing.
Skin
Clean, dry, makeup-free. Glasses off. Hair tied back.
Makeup is the one that fails quietly. Foundation flattens tone, redness and texture while leaving the image perfectly sharp — so it passes every quality check and returns confident wrong numbers.
The phone
About 30 cm from the face, at eye level, and still.
Brace your arm against your body or a surface. Most blur comes from an unsupported arm, not a moving client.
Turn off beauty filters, portrait mode, and any screen-dimming app. They alter the exact features being scored.
Sending
Wi-Fi or strong mobile signal. Keep the page open until it says it's done.
5 · If something goes wrong
| Camera shows black | Check camera permission, close other apps using the camera, reload the page |
| Page freezes or reloads | Turn off power saving, close background apps, reopen the link. Your progress is saved on the device |
| Camera won't open at all | Use the photo button and take pictures with the phone's normal camera |
| Upload fails | Move to better signal or Wi-Fi, tap send again |
| App keeps asking for a retake | Blur, low light, framing, hair or makeup, or a dirty lens. In that order |
Retake rather than push through. A scored artefact is worse than a missing score, because the plan is built on it.
Quick check before each consult
☐ Power saving off ☐ Background apps closed ☐ Lens wiped ☐ Facing the window, same spot as last time ☐ Makeup off, glasses off, hair back
